engraving sketchy style skeleton tattoo michigan

About

I've been tattooing since 2001 — over 25 years of learning the craft, understanding the skin, and figuring out what kind of work I'm most passionate about.

My focus is on tattoos that draw from the tradition of engraving, etching, and woodcut printing. If you've ever flipped through an old book and admired the illustrations — detailed black ink artwork with fine lines, cross-hatching, and a hand-printed feel — that's the aesthetic I work in. Some people call it engraving style, etching style, or blackwork illustration. Others just say it looks like something from an old book. Either way, it's what I love doing most.

I gravitate toward medieval, occult, cosmic, botanical, and dark fantasy subject matter, though I'm open to any concept that fits the style. Most of my work is black and grey, sometimes with hints of color. I like tattoos that have a slightly sketchy, imperfect quality — something that feels handmade rather than mechanical.

I have a solid understanding of how tattoos age and how to design work that holds up over time and flows with the body. I work best in sessions of 2-4 hours. I'm patient and never rush — I'll spend the extra time adjusting a design or repositioning a stencil until it's right.

I tattoo at Iconic Tattoo & Piercing in Detroit's Cass Corridor — voted #1 tattoo shop in Detroit by Metro Times.
